Cheetah Numbers Grow to 53 in India After Jwala’s 5 Cubs

Great news for India’s Project Cheetah! The country’s cheetah population has reached a new milestone of 53, following the birth of five cubs to a Namibian cheetah named Jwala at Kuno National Park .

 

This significant event, which occurred on March 9, 2026, marks Jwala’s third successful litter since her introduction to India . The arrival of these five cubs has increased the total number of Indian-born cubs to 33, making this the 10th successful cheetah litter on Indian soil .

 

The achievement was celebrated by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, who hailed it as a “proud moment for wildlife conservation” and a strong testament to the success of India’s cheetar reintroduction efforts .

 

This latest population update follows closely on the heels of another successful birth. Just days before Jwala’s litter, another cheetah, Gamini, gave birth to four cubs at the same park . Furthermore, on February 28, 2026, nine new cheetahs—six females and three males—arrived from Botswana and were released into Kuno National Park, which had previously brought the total count to 48
